The Ultimate 2025 Guide to Japan's Cherry Blossom Season

Hirosaki Park is widely recognized as one of the "Three Great Night Cherry Blossom Spots*" in Japan. With approximately 2,600 cherry trees of various types in full bloom, the park's cherry blossom-lined moat is an especially breathtaking sight. The petals that fall and float on the water’s surface, forming what is known as a "hanaikada" (flower raft), create a magical, almost otherworldly view. 

From April 18, 2025, to May 5, 2025 (dates may change depending on the blooming period), the annual Hirosaki Sakura Festival will be held. Visitors can enjoy special nighttime illuminations and other events during the festival.

Looking for an urban cherry blossom escape? Ueno Park is famed for its lively atmosphere and its collection of 1,200 cherry trees. The cherry blossom-lined pathway is perfect for picnics, while the park’s convenient location near museums and attractions makes it an excellent addition to your Tokyo itinerary.

Highlights: 

• Cherry Blossom Tunnel— A breathtaking stretch of cherry trees spanning about 500 meters, creating a canopy of blossoms overhead during peak bloom.

The Philosopher's Path is one of Kyoto's most renowned cherry blossom spots, famously known as the walking route of Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida. Stretching about 2 kilometers along a narrow canal (Sosui Branch), this charming path is lined with cherry trees, including the Somei Yoshino variety. During full bloom, the entire pathway is enveloped in soft pink blossoms. It’s a popular destination for strolling and photography, but it’s equally suitable for those seeking a tranquil moment amidst nature.

Highlights: 

• Spectacular Reflections— The rows of cherry trees alongside the canal create a breathtaking view as their flowers reflect on the water's surface. The scenery becomes especially enchanting at twilight.

• Old Kyoto Charm— Combine your walk with visits to nearby historical landmarks like Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) or Nanzenji Temple.

Kumamoto Castle is considered one of Japan’s "Three Great Castles." It is known for its stunning scenery, with stone walls and cherry blossoms beautifully interwoven. Although it suffered significant damage during the Kumamoto Earthquake on April 14, 2016, it now serves as a symbol of recovery, beloved by many. 

During spring, over 800 cherry trees bloom in full glory, creating an especially striking contrast with the castle, which is still in the process of restoration.

Held near Chidorigafuchi Moat close to the Imperial Palace, this festival showcases a scenic 700-meter cherry tree-lined path over water. Despite being located in the heart of Tokyo, the area is known for its serene and natural atmosphere, offering a tranquil escape.

2025 Festival Dates: Late March 2025 to early April 2025 (exact dates to be determined)

Highlights: 

• Enjoy the unique experience of renting rowboats to view cherry blossoms reflected on the vibrant waters of Chidorigafuchi.  

Known for its “weeping cherry tunnels,” the festival highlights 1,000 weeping cherry trees along a former railway path. Visitors can also enjoy the scenic backdrop of Mount Bandai and a vintage Steam Locomotive exhibit.

Highlights: 

• An iconic sight with its famed drooping cherry trees forming the Tunnel of Weeping Sakura—a prime location for spring photos.

For an early sakura experience, Kawazu Sakura blooms in February with its vibrant and deep pink hues. Nestled near the river, the festival also features hot spring stops and local cuisine.
